Botox Injections: All Your Questions Answered

Botox is an FDA-approved, minimally-invasive, in-office treatment that can dramatically reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your face.  It was FDA approved in 2002, and Botox is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the US and around the world. Why do facial wrinkles occur?

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging.  They occur due to changes in the skin related to age, exposure to UV rays in sunlight, pollutants, smoking, and repeated facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, or squinting.  Genetics also plays a role by influencing your skin texture and structure.

While sun protection, skincare, and a healthy diet can help to minimize or delay the appearance of wrinkles, these are not foolproof methods. Many individuals choose to supplement their daily skincare regimen with Botox treatments to provide a complete treatment for facial wrinkles.

What exactly is Botox?

Botox is the brand name for this popular treatment used by millions every year.  Botox is a purified protein that is used in specific areas of the face to relax or soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Fun Fact:  Did you know that Botox is approved for 11 indications?  Yep!  Everything from migraines and cervical dystonia to overactive bladder and underarm sweating.

How does Botox work?

There are two types of facial wrinkles – static wrinkles, which consist of lines and wrinkles that are present when your face is at rest, and dynamic wrinkles, which occur with repeated movement of facial muscles.

As we age, individuals start to notice their dynamic wrinkles becoming static wrinkles—for example, the lines in between your eyebrows.  When we are young, we can scowl (contract the brows toward each other), and when we stop, the lines disappear.  However, as we age, those lines start to “wear” into the skin and become increasingly noticeable.  This is where Botox shines!  By softening the muscle movement underneath the skin, we can support your body’s ability to renew the skin and improve the appearance of those lines and wrinkles.

Where on the face can you get Botox?

Botox is used all over the body, as mentioned above.  However, for cosmetic use, Botox is generally used in three areas of the face.

  • Frown lines – The area between your eyebrows, also known as the “11 lines.”

  • Forehead Lines – The lines that run horizontally across the forehead.

  • Crow’s Feet – The lines around the outside of the eye.

There are other places on the face where Botox can be used, but the vast majority of Botox is used in these three areas.

How to prepare for Botox injections?

There is no special preparation required.  At the time of your initial consultation, be sure to give our medical team a complete medical history, including all your health conditions, medications, and allergies.  You may ask you to temporarily stop taking certain medications like blood thinners for a few days before your Botox appointment to reduce the risk of bruising.

What happens during a Botox appointment?

Botox injections are a non-surgical, minimally-invasive, office-based treatment for facial rejuvenation.  Botox has famously been called the “Lunchtime Lift” as individuals can come and get treated and go back to daily activities immediately.  The procedure generally takes less than 30 minutes to complete.

The Botox treatment itself is pretty straightforward.  Our Master-Level Injector, Lauren Dykes, MSN, NP-C, will cleanse your skin and administer several Botox injections in carefully selected sections of the face mentioned above.

Are Botox injections painful?

This is a common concern.  The injections are performed with very fine needles and cause a little discomfort, if any.

Is there any downtime?

There is very little downtime after Botox.  You can go home right away after your Botox injections and resume most normal activities.

What are some post-Botox precautions?

You should avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for the first few days.  This is to prevent Botox from spreading to the surrounding muscle areas and interfering with the results you wanted.

How soon will I see results?  How long do the results last?

In general, the effects of Botox are visible almost immediately (within 1-2 days).  Some patients can take up to 14 days to see the maximum benefit.  The results last for 3-4 months on average, after which time you need repeat injections to maintain the results.

What are the common risks and side effects of Botox?

Minor bruising and discomfort in the injected area are common and usually go away within a day or two, without any specific treatment; however bruising may persist up to 10-14 days, so please take this into consideration when planning events or vacations.
