Juvederm Dermal Fillers
Dermal Fillers: Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Vollure, Juvederm Voluma, & Juvederm Volbella
As we age, our skin and underlying tissue begin to lose volume and elasticity. This results in the loss of volume in specific areas of the face, which can make individuals appear older than they feel. Injectable dermal filler treatments can instantly reverse some of these changes, soften your appearance, and help you look years younger with a quick, minimally-invasive office procedure.
Dermal fillers are an FDA-approved cosmetic treatment designed to reduce the signs of aging and restore more youthful facial contours. They are one of the most common non-surgical cosmetic treatments performed in the US – nearly 3 million dermal filler procedures are performed each year.
The Juvederm family of injectable dermal fillers is made by Allergan, the same company that makes Botox. Juvederm contains hyaluronic acid and is FDA-approved for the treatment of the face, specifically the chin, lips, perioral area, and cheeks.

What is a hyaluronic acid filler? How does it work?
As mentioned above, the Juvederm family of injectable fillers contains hyaluronic acid (HA). This is a naturally-occurring substance that is found in abundant quantities in the human body, especially in the skin. It is hydrophilic, i.e., it attracts water and keeps the skin looking hydrated and youthful.
The hyaluronic acid in Juvederm dermal fillers is a smooth, gel-like substance that can be safely injected into the skin. When Juvederm is injected into areas of the face with fine lines, wrinkles, creases, and volume loss, it fills these imperfections and helps you instantly look younger.
There are different products in the Juvederm family that all contain hyaluronic acid but in different concentrations and with different bonding technologies. Each product is designed to address specific signs of facial aging when injected into the target area.
Juvéderm Ultra Plus Technology
Because Juvederm Ulta Plus is more hydrophilic (water-loving) than other Juvederm products, it adds correction by drawing in a little of the moisture within the skin. This produces beautiful improvements in folds and wrinkles around the mouth.
Juvederm Vollure Technology
Vollure is an advanced facial filler that uses cutting-edge Vycross technology. It makes the filler stable and prevents rapid absorption, thereby prolonging the results of the treatment. Also, Vollure is lighter and more fluid than many other dermal fillers, so the results are more natural-looking. Yet, Vollure is firm enough to effectively and noticeably fill lines and creases. This balance makes Vollure a very versatile filler.
Juvederm Voluma Technology
Juvederm Voluma is designed to restore lost volume in the cheeks and chin and give the mid-face more definition. Not only does it fill up the lost volume, the hyaluronic acid in Voluma pulls moisture into the treated area, helping the skin look softer and younger. A Voluma treatment can help correct problems like deep nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and jowls by restoring the volume that was once there.
Juvederm Volbella Technology
Juvederm Volbella is finer and thinner than the other two products in the line – Vollure and Voluma. This makes Volbella ideal for injection more superficially under the skin’s surface.
What is a Juvederm Dermal filler procedure like?
Please do not schedule any dental appointments 2 weeks before or after dermal filler appointments; this includes dental cleanings. Please avoid dermal filler appointments within 2 weeks of any vaccine, immunization, or booster. Some medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs (nonsteroidal - ibuprofen), vitamins (Vit E, fish oil), and blood thinners (aspirin and prescribed blood thinners) can increase bruising- please consult with your prescribing provider to see if these medications can be stopped prior to dermal filler injections.
Appointments for dermal fillers typically last about 1 hour; please arrive at your appointment without makeup on if possible. A topical numbing cream will be applied to the skin to help ease the discomfort. Your skin will be cleaned thoroughly prior to injections. (You cannot have dermal fillers with any open wound, cold sore, or signs of infection). If you have a history of cold sores, an anti-viral medication may be prescribed for you.
Juvederm Dermal Fillers Recovery and Aftercare
Following dermal fillers, you will be asked to avoid exercise or any other activities that will cause sweating or increased heart rate for 24 hours. It is common to have bruising and swelling following dermal filler injections. These symptoms typically resolve in several days; however, some bruising can persist for up to 2 weeks. Please plan accordingly around events and vacations. Following your injections, you will be asked to avoid applying makeup or skincare products for the remainder of the day.
How long do results last?
The longevity of dermal fillers varies from person to person and from treatment to treatment. Typically aesthetic results last 6-12 months but longer in some cases (depending on the product used along with a person’s metabolism)
